In the latest NASCAR news, Tony Kanaan won the 97th Indianapolis 500 over Memorial Day weekend, earning him more than $2.3 million from the overall purse of $12,020,065.
Kanaan told USA Today that he already bought a Ferrari with the winnings and is planning on buying a house. After participating in the Indy 500 12 times, Kanaan finally won after leading for 34 laps, three of which were the last laps of the race.
"I was totally fine with the fact that I might never be able to win this thing," Kanaan told the news source. "But every year I came back, I knew I had one more chance. I don't know if I can call this validation, but I feel that if anybody needed a validation from me, this was it."
With his latest win in Indianapolis, Kanaan added to his 15 IndyCar victories and a series championship in 2004. The New York Times noted that in every Indianapolis 500 in the last nine years, Kanaan had led at some point in the race, but was never able to win. In 2007, he led for 83 laps but two caution flags and weather derailed him.
