Auto sales strong heading into Car Care Month

September was an aberration for the automotive industry, as there were fewer selling days when compared to September 2012. Essentially, the Labor Day holiday, which tends to see strong automotive sales, didn't count toward September 2013. However, even despite fewer days, automakers were still able to post gains, and 2013 is shaping up to be a promising year in overall sales.

BMW reported that it was able to sell 28,874 units in September, up 8.3 percent when compared to last year. In the first nine months of this year, BMW sold 262,200 vehicles, up 11.6 percent when compared to the same period last year.

"September was unusual because of significantly fewer selling days than August, so the more than 8 percent increase for BMW and another record month for MINI are further fueling BMW Group momentum going into the final quarter of the year," said Ludwig Willisch, president and CEO, BMW of North America. "October means arrival of the new X5, a full month for the new 4 Series, and the full range of new diesel engines in our 3 and 5 Series cars; just a few of the reasons why we are excited about the next three months."

According to BMW, its MINI brand sold 5,306 units last month, up 8.3 percent from the year before and its strongest September to date.

Sales slip at Nissan
Nissan reported that September sales totaled 86,868 units, down 5.5 percent when compared to September 2012. Fred Diaz, divisional vice president, sales and marketing, service and parts at the automaker said that September was a unique month with the fewer selling days and that the company is optimistic that strong sales will continue in the final months of the year, as 2013 will be a great overall year for the automotive industry. The automaker also has plans to release a new car.

"Anticipation is building for the all-new 2014 Nissan Rogue, which we expect to begin selling next month," Diaz said. "Rogue marks the last of our five top-selling models to be completely redesigned in the past 15 months, a strategy that also has driven stronger sales of Altima, Sentra, Versa and Pathfinder. We expect that demand for these new products will continue to accelerate our sales momentum."

As vehicle sales have been strong through September, new car owners are reminded that October is Car Care Month, and some extra precautions are something to consider with the colder months of the year approaching.

The Engine Rebuilders Council is reminding all motorists to have their engines checked during the fall. As the summer driving season has come to a close, vehicle owners should assess the condition of their engines. The council notes that it might even be a good idea to consider remanufactured or rebuilt engine, as they get better gas mileage than a worn-out engine.

"Before severe winter weather arrives, it is a good idea to make sure your vehicle's engine is running effectively and efficiently," said Rick Simko, chairman of the Engine Rebuilders Council. "If you find that your car or truck is experiencing major engine damage, but is in relatively good shape otherwise, consider repowering it with a rebuilt engine so you know you can count on it when the temperatures drop."
