Las Vegas, NV (October 26, 2012) - A new champion was crowned at the NHRA Big O Tires Nationals in Las Vegas, Nevada, as the Husky Liners® sponsored COPO Camaro won class CC/SA.
The COPO Camaro was Chevrolet's high performance special-order system that was adopted by dealers to build high performance models in the 1960s. Now it's being used for races and Chevrolet has made 69 COPO Camaros available for purchase.
The vehicle was driven by Todd Patterson from Augusta, Kansas, coming from the Patterson Racing team. The race was held at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway and also celebrated National Breast Cancer Awareness Month by "going pink."
NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series Top Fuel Dragster points leader Antron Brown is planning to wear a pink fire suit in honor of the National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The issue hits close to home for Brown, as his mother-in-law suffered from breast cancer, but survived the ordeal.
“It was tough for her,” Brown said, “and we weren’t able to be down there in Louisiana to help her. You just have to pray and leave it in God’s hands. I can’t even fathom what it’s like for any woman to go through that kind of ordeal.”
While awareness of breast cancer was being celebrated, Patterson showed out at the race, adding to his legacy as one of the sport's leading engine builders and a decorated sportsman racing standout. Patterson qualified No. 1 out of 93 cars, coming in with a time of 9:61.
The racer and the COPO Camaro is scheduled to be at Husky Liners® booth at the SEMA show in Las Vegas on Tuesday, October 30th, giving fans a chance to meet the driver and see the vehicle in which he won the race.
