Truck sales outpace the rest of the industry

Pickup trucks are flying off dealer lots like hot cakes. As the automotive industry continues to show impressive gains throughout 2013, trucks in particular are being sold in high numbers. 

A recent report on PickupTrucks.com indicated that when compared to the industry as a whole, trucks are being sold at a faster rate, accounting fro 12.1 percent of total sales. That pace is not expected to slow down either. The article states that truck sales are typically stronger toward the end of the year, so it is likely the segment will exceed 13 percent of all sales by the end of the year. The last time that happened was in 2007. 

Total vehicle sales are expected to reach 1,270,000 units in August, marking a 12 percent increase on a year-over-year comparison, according to a joint report from J.D. Power and LMC Automotive. 

"The industry as a whole continues to experience a robust improvement in demand, and our forecast for August is looking to be the best month for retail sales that we've seen in the past seven years," said John Humphrey, senior vice president of the global automotive practice at J.D. Power. "Moreover, this strong selling environment is occurring when consumers are spending more on new vehicles than any month on record, which is a further indication of the underlying strength of the sector."

Truck sales jump on housing, energy and agriculture
However, while total vehicle sales are strong, why are trucks so popular?

While much of the increases in truck sales have been due to the continual strengthening housing market, experts noted that's not the only reason. Joe Langley, a principal analyst at research firm IHS, told PickupTrucks.com that the boom in the energy and agricultural sectors are also helping truck sales.

"Pickup trucks boomed before housing even came back," Langley told the news source. "Housing's only become a story in the past six months, nine months or so. What really helped the pickup sales in the early part of the recession recovery, from late 2009 to 2010 and 2011, was the energy sector, energy and agriculture. Those two sectors of the economy were really beginning to boom, and they also rely heavily on pickup trucks."

Types of trucks
A separate report from TruckTrend.com showed what type of cab truck buyers want. According to the report, as a crew cab offers more interior space, that is top pick for truck shoppers. 

"As far as cab layouts are concerned, the hottest segment of the pickup truck market is the crew cab," reads the report. "While the numbers vary based on manufacturer, crew cabs typically make up nearly 60 percent of half-ton and compact/midsize truck sales. Crew cabs offer more interior space than extended cabs do, and it's easier to access gear and get into and out of the back - especially when the truck is parked near a post or another vehicle."

As a result of the increasing popularity of crew cabs, extended cabs are harder to come by. In lieu of releasing an extended cab model, the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado features a new double cab. The back seat of the cab is easier to access when compared to an extended cab, and is just one reason Chevy made the switch.
