Formula 1 United States named Sporting Event of the Year

NASCAR news recently has been all about Tony Kanaan's win at the Indy 500; however, other racing news shows how popular Formula 1 is across the country.

The Formula 1 United States 2012 race held last November has been named the Sports Event of the Year at the 2013 SportsBusiness Journal/Daily Business Awards. The race beat out events like the Ryder Cup and NHL Stanley Cup Finals.

"The fact that we are being recognized as the 'Sports Event of the Year' - over major sporting events like the Ryder Cup and the Stanley Cup really is a major win for Texas," said Red McCombs, a major COTA investor and driving force on the project. "This can be huge for economic development in the whole central Texas area from San Antonio to Austin and the surrounding communities. Not only from more successful events at COTA, but also as a result of this recognition getting the word out that we can do this - we can play with the big boys and we have a lot to offer people looking for a great time in sports and entertainment."

The Formula 1 United States Grand Prix saw more than 265,000 fans in attendance.
