Football season is on the horizon and that means tailgaters are getting their vehicles ready for the pregame celebrations.

While the NFL preseason is currently underway, with the regular season set to kick off at the beginning of September, college football begins this weekend, meaning tailgating is here. With that being said, Cars.com recently named the best cars for tailgating.

"With football season comes the return of fans to parking lots across the nation to partake in tailgating festivities," said Patrick Olsen, editor-in-chief at Cars.com. "The ultimate tailgate requires the perfect tailgating car, so we took a look at a variety of new cars to determine which ones have factory-installed features to take the drama out of the pre-game party."

According to the source, the Ram 1500 is the No. 1 vehicle for a variety of reasons. Cars.com noted that the pickup truck enables owners to lower the parking height, allowing them easier access to the bed of the truck, an optional RamBox package - essentially a cooler that can fit up to 280 cans with ice - and adjustable tie downs that make sure nothing slides around in the bed of a truck.

While the Ram 1500 was at the top of the pack for tailgating, it's not the only great vehicle for a tailgate, according to Cars.com.

"The 1500 really has it all when it comes to tailgating, but we realize the pickups aren't for everyone," said Olsen. "Our list includes a variety of cars that also come with great tailgating features and fit the needs of every kind of driver."

Cars.com also named other notable vehicles for game day, which include the 2013 Chevrolet Suburban, Chrysler Town & Country, Ford Flex, GMC Acadia, Honda Fit, Honda Odyssey, Honda Ridgeline, Subaru Forester and Toyota Sienna.

Additional tailgate accessories
Anyone looking for some added protection to their car for tailgating season should equip it with Husky Liners® custom fit floor mats. Owners can sit back and enjoy the game, as they no longer need to worry about the salsa getting all over the interior of the vehicle. These liners catch whatever you're spilling on the mat for an easy clean.

In addition to protecting the interior, pickup truck owners can add some additional accessories to their exteriors to maximize their tailgating experience. Some options include tailgates, conracks and sunshades.
